Palin's Constitution

Regardless of the importance of various small-bore controversies that get inflated by the need to fill cable net and talk show time during slow news months, it's still always a good thing for people to explain core Constitutional principles...or mistaken notions about them:
It's not surprising that Sarah Palin would come out in support of Dr. Laura Schlessinger's interpretation of the First Amendment as not guaranteeing freedom of speech, but rather freedom from criticism. Palin's expressed similar beliefs before, basically that the First Amendment only guarantees her and her political allies freedom of speech, while any criticism of her statements is an unconstitutional infringement on her right to say whatever she wants.

It goes without saying that this is painfully stupid...
That's Adam Serwer taking apart the Sage of Wasilla.  You are reading him, right?

  1. I'm reading him. He is good and completely right on Palin. She is woefully ignorant on anything relating to the constitution. And on the things she does seem to understand she doesn't care about.

I would love to hear what James Madison would have to say to when she says stuff like this, "Go back to what our founders and our founding documents meant — they’re quite clear — that we would create law based on the God of the bible and the ten commandments."

  2. Serwer's been making a strong running for "Best blogger not named Jonathan"

  3. Palin's defense of Dr. Laura's unique interpreratation of the First Amendment, makes Jonathan Chait's joke about public floggings of intellectuals during the Palin administration, a lot less funny.

My God, she's the perfect example of an idiot in the original and modernse sense of the word. If she ever becomes President we Americans and very likely the rest of the World are so screwed.
